The Loom… It couldn’t have found a better name! Designed by British Industrial Designer Benjamin Hubert for Swedish Manufacturer Zero, The Loom is a unique series of pendant fixtures which truly embody the world of fashion, technology, lighting design, and architecture all bundled into one! Their “almost” seamless (no pun intended) forms have a soft, elegant, and weightless appeal that are sure to be a hit on the market! As well, their tactile qualities also put them apart from other designs out there, allowing the end-user to accessorize with lighting as they would with a rug, pillow or throw.

Here’s a little about the process of the design:

“…Loom is a collection of organic textile pendant lamps utilising a new 3d woven polyester material designed by Benjamin Hubert for Swedish manufacturer Zero. Originally used as a source of comfort in the bedding industry the 3d textile has never before been used in the lighting industry. The textile can be stretched around complex forms and diffuses the light through its dense network of warp woven polyester fibers. The Textile is offset and contrasted with a brightly lit polymer lens at the heart of each pendant. The forms of the textile lamps reference traditional Chinese lanterns as a known reference point transformed with a new technological material.”

Our theme for today: Lighting! I have chosen to feature some MORE than interesting wall sconce lighting fixtures which exemplify the following notion; we sometimes forget or dismiss the importance of lighting and the opportunity it provides to create an effect more substantial than the fixture it is emitted from. In such, lighting fixtures such as wall sconces can provide designs, patterns, and textures by manipulating light and shadows. The fantastic idea and concept of this is that you are able to enhance the design of a space without having to permanently impose the design which would typically be introduced through wallpaper, wall vinyls, painting techniques, and so on… Lighting is such a key element to any space and allows our creativity to explore design past JUST the design of the lighting fixture itself- think beyond: think about the light, think about the shadows, think about your space & location, and then you will see there is so much more you can do! The options indeed are endless…

In my kitchen reno madness I’ve come across some great pendant lights. I find with pendant lights it really depends on what your intention is for them…..do you want them to grab someone’s attention the second they walk into a room? Or do you want them more just for function so in that case they should blend into the backdrop more and let something else in the room take center stage. I like to think of pendants as the jewellery of the room or as the finishing touch so I do like the ones that have some sparkle to them.

Feels like I’ve been looking for alot of lighting lately. Sounds like fun? It is at first but then when you need to find multiple good options it can get a bit trying. I did have some luck and came across some absolutely stunning ones though!

Tom…you’ve done it again! Tom Dixon that is.

With the realease of the new Bronze Copper Shade, we find ourselves on the path towards sophisticated glamor..without the glamorous prices! A highly sculptural fixture with a dynamic aesthetic due to its reflective qualities makes this a truly unique pendant. Additionally, the use of a varied finish on the interior of the fixture (Copper) provides a luminous and warm glow- almost “cacoon-like,’ while the brass exterior reads extremely rich with plenty of depth!

Finding just that perfect chandelier or ceiling pendant can sometimes be a larger challenge and journey than you had initially anticipated! The one thing that we need is light, but more importantly where does the light come from; and even more specifically what type of fixture provides you with this light? The challenge can sometimes be faced with your style preference: are you ultra modern, traditional, contemporary, eclectic, or is there simply no label for your sense of style?!? Unfortunately, with lighting the design of a fixture can sometimes be directed TOO solely in one of those categories and doesn’t meet your diverse tastes. I personally feel LUCEPLAN has “hit the nail on the head” with the introduction of their HOPE Ceiling Pendant. It’s glamorous, extravagant, glitzy BUT also modern, sleek, simple- I don’t know what it is….except Beautiful! Whether you agree or not is a matter of taste, but all I can say is that I have HOPE again!

High/ Low – Linear Chandelier

The linear chandelier is still a favorite of mine…..love the clean lines combined with the glitz of the crystals. It has been hanging in our dining room for about 3 years now and still haven’t gotten tired of it yet! There are varying price ranges out there for this style. Here is one well priced one compared to the “original” design from James R. Moder:

SALONE INTERNAZIONALE DEL MOBILE

As you may or may not already know, the Milano Design Fair recently took place, with plenty…may I repeat… PLENTY of design “Eye Candy!” Something exciting from the Fair has caught the attention of many, including myself, was the “Foglie” (leaves) lighting collection designed by Matali Crasset for Pallucco. The series of lighting fixtures include ceiling pendants, wall sconces, and floor lamps. The truly organic forms and shapes that layer upon one another, while creating dynamic shadows and visions of light, make these fixtures wonderfully spectacular focals to any space! I can appreciate the modularity and complexity which went into making this design, but what makes it beautiful is how it looks effortless!

The BOCCI.14 light fixtures created by BOCCI Vancouver have become progressively more popular and Internationally recognized, and grace the interiors of multi-million dollar mansions, retail spaces, hotels, and just about any amazing project you can think of! Typically in lighting design you will find maybe 2, possibly 3 maximum variations of one style whether it be in design or size. When it comes to finishes or colors, there might actually be many options but this does not drastically change the effect of light fixtures in most cases. This goes for pendants, lamps, chandeliers, wall fixtures etc… but if anything most of the time you’ll come along only one available option for any given design. Therefore, creating dynamic, layered, and impactful compositions with lighting can become very challenging without making it look “hodge-podge’ or too busy when using multiple designs! The new BEAT by Tom Dixon helps to overcome this challenge by taking elegant and organic forms to create a series of completely interchangeable fixtures. Where one curves in-another curves out-where one curves up-another curves down. Through also keeping a consistent finish: black painted exterior with a hand-beaten brass interior- the focus becomes the shape & form, truly allowing for you to express and create a dynamic composition playing with height variations, asymmetry, positive/negative space, light, and even dropping some pendants down to the floor!
