Outside the BOX!

When it comes to architecture, sometimes we get too wrapped-up in the mind-set of 4 walls, a door, and windows.  Though sometimes we are faced with extreme site challenges which forces us into innovation.  How about this for a restriction:  an intersection where the site is triangular and less than 2,200 sq.ft.!  Well it’s not the first time we have ever been approached with such a scenario, but this time architectural firm Durbach Block Architects from Australia have designed a ‘wedge-shaped’ commercial building for offices, a restaurant & bar in Sydney, Australia.  Composed of both white matt and gloss mosaic tiles, lines of uneven black windows, and a flared, open roof with a courtyard pushes the boundaries of our imagination.  The shape in-all also helps to exaggerate the actual size of the building and site location- this is done through the flared roof acting as a cornice in an hourglass-shape and literally “bending” our perceptions!

…Energy Efficiency… “The building observes the fundamental principles of energy efficiency and good design for a medium scaled city building: Solid masonry walls provide insulation from outside temperatures, while windows with recessed reveals provide natural light without excessive heat gain.”
