As you may have already seen through previous posts on Kalu’s Blog, I get absolutely weak at the knees whenever I come across new solutions and innovative ways when utilizing solar panelling and energy.  So to no surprise, when I stumbled upon LIN’s newly designed International Design Center located in Saint-Eienne, France, I was…well… “GA-GA!”  This modern, intuitive, and extremely efficient building was designed with the upmost attention and care for the environment, as well as for innovative design.  The ability to not only incorporate solar panelling in an interesting, appealing and dynamic way inspired me, but as well the way LIN designed this new structure to contrast the historical surroundings, while truly paving a new path for the future of architecture and design!

“…The Centre International du Design” is a new institution for communication, research and education in design. The project is situated on the historic site of the National Arms Manufacture in St. Etienne.  It involves the renovation of several historic buildings, as well as the integration of a new building the ‘platine’ (200 x32 m), an observation tower (31m high), two gardens and the Place d’Armes, a public esplanade. The ‘platine’ is an interclimatic laboratory whose adaptive skin is enveloping several programs as an exhibition spaces, an auditorium, the ‘agora’, a greenhouse and a media- and material library. It is reacting on their different needs in terms of light and climate. It is also an expression of the different activities in the Cité du Design. ”
